Bono said Ireland’s prosperity had been achieved through tax innovation. He believes it would be churlish to criticize the band for being innovative in relation to their tax affairs. U2 DVD Review

Filmed in December 1997 in Mexico, this show took place soon after the South African leg of the band’s Popmart tour. It may be almost ten years ago, but any fan being at a local concert will watch this with an ever-growing smile on their face. The huge lemon that turns into a mirror ball, Bono in his boxing gown, that huge screen… Oh, yes, it did really happen and no doubt you were there.
Bono… Many Years ago

Together with his brother Norman Hewson, Bono was raised in Dublin by his mother and his father, Brendan Robert “Bob” Hewson. The boy was only fourteen, when his mother died in September 1974 of a cerebral aneurysm at her father’s funeral. Many compositions from U2’s albums, like “Out of Control”, “I Will Follow”, “Lemon”, “Mofo”, and “Tomorrow”, focus on the loss of his mother.
Now Bono is married to Alison Hewson. Their relationship began more than thirty years ago and the couple was married in 1982 in a Church of Ireland ceremony at All Saints Church. They have 4 children, Jordan, Elijah Bob Patricius, Memphis Eve, and John Abraham.
In adolescence, Bono attended Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Clontarf. He and his friends were part of a street gang called “Lypton Village,” that had a ritual of nickname-giving. The boy had several names: first, he was called “Steinvic von Huyseman”, then just “Huyseman”, then “Houseman”, then “Bon Murray”, later “Bono Vox of O’Connell Street”, and finally just “Bono”.
“Bono Vox” is an alteration of the word Bonavox, which is a brand of hearing aid. Translated from Latin, the phrase means “for a good voice”. “Bona Vox” was the name of a hearing aid shop that they usually passed in Dublin. It is said that Hewson was nicknamed “Bono Vox” after the shop by one of his friends Gavin Friday. Initially, Bono didn’t like the name, but after he learned it loosely translated to “good voice”, he accepted it. The musician has been known as “Bono” since the late ‘70s, even before the formation of the U2 band. Although being his stage name, close family and friends also refer to him as Bono, including his wife and band members.

U2 frontman’s $220 million project to stamp his mark on the skyline of his hometown has hit a wrong note with conservationists. Bono is planning to build Ireland’s tallest tower in Dublin as well as revamp U2’s city centre hotel. They want to ensure that their legacy lives on long after their music stops. However, they now stand accused of pushing for the destruction of a historic area of the city.
